In the coral reefs of Indonesia, a small fish is doing something no one expected: it appears to act like a reef nurse, tending to wounded corals and helping them recover. Scientists recorded damselfish visiting injured coral colonies and stimulating tissue regrowth, a behavior that challenges long-held assumptions about reef dynamics.
A fish that tends to coral wounds
The observations took place in the Spermonde Islands, a coral-rich archipelago off southwest Sulawesi. Researchers noticed that when corals were experimentally damaged, certain damselfish species returned repeatedly to the injury sites. There, the fish nibbled at the exposed skeleton and edges of living tissue, a behavior that looked destructive at first glance.
Instead, the opposite proved true. Corals that received regular visits from these fish healed faster and more completely than those left alone. The fish were effectively cleaning the wounds, removing algae and debris that would otherwise slow recovery. This active maintenance, the study authors say, amounts to a form of mutualism previously undocumented in coral reef science.
