On 12 August 2026, Europe witnessed its first total solar eclipse in over two decades. Millions of people across the continent watched as the Moon completely covered the Sun's bright disc, briefly turning day into night and revealing the Sun's outer atmosphere. Totality was visible from Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal, while most of the rest of Europe saw a partial eclipse.
A Sky Show Like No Other
As the Moon crept across the Sun, the light faded and the temperature dropped. Shadows sharpened, and leaves on trees, or even colanders held up to the light, projected tiny crescents on the ground. Just before the Sun's disc was fully blocked, small beads of light appeared at the Moon's edge, where sunlight slipped through lunar valleys. Then came a final bright flash, the diamond ring effect, and totality began.
In an instant, darkness set in. The Sun's outer atmosphere, the corona, shone in all its glory, with white streaks of light extending outward in every direction. Bright red, glowing prominences clung close to the Sun's surface. It was a sight that left even seasoned scientists in awe.
Scientists and Spectators Share the Moment
Professor Carole Mundell, the European Space Agency's Director of Science, was watching from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in Spain during ESA's live broadcast. She described the experience as "boggles the mind," adding that the detail was incredible and the eerie, nighttime light felt very special.
ESA arranged live telescope feeds from three Spanish sites: León, Palencia, and Javalambre. Photographers across Europe shared their images with the agency. Even from space, the event was captured: Earth observation satellite MTG-11 recorded the Moon's shadow moving across Earth, while ESA's Proba-3 mission, an artificial eclipse-maker, captured a double eclipse from orbit.
For those who could not travel to the path of totality, ESA's live broadcast brought the experience home. Hosted by Dame Dr Maggie Aderin, the programme explored the Sun's mysteries, the corona, and how a famous eclipse once changed our understanding of gravity. It also looked at how ESA is now creating eclipses artificially.
