A class of drugs already taken by millions for diabetes and weight loss may do more than control blood sugar and appetite. New research in mice suggests GLP-1 medicines could slow the ageing process itself, adding a surprising new layer to their growing reputation.
The study, published in Nature, comes from researchers in the United States who treated older mice with a GLP-1 drug and tracked signs of biological ageing. The results showed improvements in several markers tied to cellular health and metabolism, raising the possibility that these drugs affect ageing pathways directly, not just through weight loss.
What the mouse data actually showed
The scientists gave the drug to mice equivalent in age to humans in their 60s or 70s. Compared with untreated mice, the treated animals showed changes in gene activity linked to ageing, including reduced inflammation and better function in mitochondria, the energy centers of cells.
The treated mice also performed better on physical tests, such as grip strength and treadmill endurance. Their bodies appeared to maintain more youthful characteristics at the molecular level, even though the treatment lasted only a few weeks.
Why this matters beyond weight loss
GLP-1 drugs, such as semaglutide, are already widely prescribed in the United States and elsewhere for type 2 diabetes and obesity. But this study suggests their benefits may extend beyond those conditions. The researchers noted that the effects on ageing markers appeared partly independent of the drugs' weight-reducing action, hinting at a direct biological influence on the ageing process.
