Farmers in Nepal have a new weapon against one of their oldest foes: artificial intelligence that reads monkey behavior. Researchers have built a system that can tell when a troop of macaques is about to raid a field, giving farmers precious time to chase them off before the crops disappear.

A camera that watches for trouble

The system uses cameras placed around farmlands to monitor macaque movements. The AI analyzes video in real time and looks for specific postures and gestures that signal an impending raid. When it spots those signs, it sends an alert to farmers, who can then respond before the monkeys reach the crops.

Progress Jung Thapa and his team developed the detection system in Nepal. The AI was trained on footage of macaques showing aggressive behaviors, such as lunging or tail-raising, which often precede a crop raid. By catching these cues early, the system aims to reduce the constant vigilance farmers currently need.

Why farmers care

Macaques are a major headache for rural communities in Nepal. They are intelligent, adaptable, and quick, and they can strip a field of maize, millet, or vegetables in a single visit. For smallholder farmers, losing a harvest to monkeys can mean losing a large share of their yearly income and food supply.

Traditional deterrents, like scarecrows or noise, lose their effect over time because the monkeys get used to them. The AI system offers a more dynamic approach: it does not scare the animals constantly, but only when they are actually preparing to attack. This makes the warning more meaningful and keeps the monkeys from learning to ignore it.

The project is still in its early stages, but the potential is clear. If the technology proves reliable, it could be expanded to other regions in Nepal and beyond, where human-monkey conflict is a growing problem.

A quieter field, a fuller harvest

The significance of this work goes beyond one farm or one village. It shows how artificial intelligence can be used not to replace human judgment, but to support it. Farmers still make the final call, but they now have better information about when to act.

For now, the AI is a tool, not a cure. It does not remove the monkeys or end the conflict, but it gives people a smarter way to coexist with wildlife. In a country where people and primates share the same land, that is a step worth watching.
