One of Australia's most elusive birds may have turned up in a new place. Researchers working in south-west Queensland recorded calls linked to the critically endangered night parrot, raising hopes that another population may be present in the arid outback.

A bird known mostly by absence

Night parrots are famous partly because they are so hard to see. They are nocturnal, secretive and associated with remote landscapes where direct sightings are rare. That makes audio recording one of the most important conservation tools.

ABC News reported that researchers captured fresh recordings and planned to return after heavy rain, which may encourage breeding. If confirmed, the location could add another piece to the species' fragile recovery picture.

Why a sound can matter

For endangered species, proof of presence can change land management, monitoring priorities and protection planning. A call in the night is not just a sound. It can become the beginning of a conservation map.
