NOAA's Okeanos Explorer has opened its 2026 field season with a mapping shakedown off Hawaii, the first expedition in a broader federal campaign called Pacific Quest. The mission runs from April 29 to May 6 and focuses on testing systems while gathering useful seafloor data.
Mapping before discovery
Ocean exploration often starts with a simple problem: scientists cannot study what they have not mapped. Detailed bathymetry helps identify canyons, ridges, seamounts and habitats that may deserve closer investigation later.
A shakedown cruise may sound routine, but it is the practical beginning of a larger campaign. Crews verify sonar, navigation, data systems and shipboard workflows while producing maps that can guide future dives.
The Pacific is still full of blank space
Even in 2026, large parts of the ocean floor remain poorly mapped at high resolution. That makes every new expedition part science and part infrastructure. Better maps improve marine protection, hazard planning, navigation and the search for unknown ecosystems.
