NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured the nebula in such crisp detail that it reveals a structure never seen before: a pair of cavernous bubbles and shell-like rings surrounding a dying star. The image, released by NASA, shows the nebula looking uncannily like a male lion's head, with the star as its glowing eye.

A Star's Final Act, Written in Gas and Light

The nebula, catalogued as NGC 2392, is a planetary nebula, the remains of a Sun-like star that expelled its outer layers at the end of its life. At its center sits a white dwarf, a dense, hot core that is all that remains of the original star. In the new Webb image, that white dwarf appears as a small, pinkish-white circle with eight diffraction spikes, the signature of Webb's optics. Around it, purple-pink bubbles and shells form an oval that stretches across the frame, giving the nebula its lion-like profile.

Why This Image Matters to Astronomers and Stargazers

The Webb telescope used its Near Infrared Camera and Mid Infrared Instrument to capture the scene, combining data from both to reveal details that earlier telescopes could not see. For astronomers, the new view offers a clearer look at how the nebula's gas and dust are distributed, and how the central star's radiation shapes them. For the public, the image is a reminder that the universe is full of objects that look familiar, even when they are impossibly far away. The nebula has been known for over two centuries, but Webb's resolution turns it into something new and almost alive.
