Flying into darkness at 460 miles per hour

The pilots took off from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and aimed their jets at the path of totality. By flying at about 460 miles per hour, they matched the shadow's speed and stayed in darkness for more than seven minutes, nearly double the time people on the ground experienced. The WB-57 jets, originally built for high-altitude reconnaissance, carried specialized instruments to study the eclipse from 50,000 feet.

The mission required precise timing. The pilots had to intercept the shadow at exactly the right moment and hold their course while the moon blocked the sun. What the instruments captured in the dark
