This surprising chemical fingerprint suggests the material came from deep inside larger icy bodies that were shattered long ago.

A shattered past hidden in plain sight

The story begins with Voyager 2, which in 1989 spotted six previously unknown moons around Neptune. Five of these are tiny satellites orbiting just beyond the planet's main rings. Their small size and great distance have made them nearly impossible to study from Earth. But JWST changed that, giving scientists a close look at three of these inner moons: Larissa, Galatea, and Proteus, along with Neptune's rings.

A team led by Caltech researchers used the telescope to analyze the chemical makeup of these objects. What they found was unlike anything seen before among bodies in the outer solar system. The presence of clay-like minerals, which form in the presence of liquid water, points to a violent origin. The researchers believe these moons are not original but are instead assembled from debris of a much larger satellite system that was destroyed.

The capture of Triton and the destruction of a moon system

The likely culprit is Triton, Neptune's largest moon. Triton is thought to have formed elsewhere in the solar system and was later captured by Neptune's gravity. That capture would have been catastrophic, tearing apart any moons that already existed around the planet. The debris from that event eventually clumped together to form the small inner moons we see today.

"If Neptune once had a system of moons that looked something like what we see at Uranus today, we expect it would've been completely destroyed by the process of Triton getting captured," said Ryleigh Davis, a former Caltech graduate student and lead author of the study published in Science Advances. "This is exciting new evidence that something catastrophic happened at Neptune that completely destroyed its original satellites, and we're getting to see the fingerprints left behind by that process."

Neptune stands out among the giant planets because it lacks a typical system of large, orderly moons. That unusual arrangement has long hinted at a different history. Another recent study from the same JWST research program, led by Caltech postdoctoral scholar Matthew Belyakov, offers independent support for this idea. That research suggests Nereid, another moon of Neptune, may be the only survivor from the original satellite system.

The findings give scientists a rare glimpse into a planetary catastrophe that happened billions of years ago. They also show how telescopes like JWST can reveal the hidden history of our solar system, one chemical clue at a time.
