South Asia's roughly 4,367 Bengal tigers face a threat that is easy to overlook: parasites. A new study suggests these infections could act as silent killers, undermining the health of wild cats that already struggle with shrinking habitat and prey scarcity.
Hidden dangers in tiger blood and scat
Researchers analyzed decades of data on parasites found in Bengal tigers across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. They looked at samples from blood, feces, and tissue, identifying a range of internal parasites including roundworms, tapeworms, and protozoa like Toxoplasma gondii. The study, published in the International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, found that many tigers carry multiple parasite species at once, which can lead to malnutrition, weakened immune systems, and reduced reproductive success.
Why local communities should care
The study focused on the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest shared by India and Bangladesh, where tigers swim between islands and sometimes cross paths with villagers who enter the forest for honey, fish, or wood. When tigers are weakened by parasites, they may become more likely to attack livestock or people, increasing conflict. Local forest departments and conservation groups have long monitored tiger numbers, but this research suggests that health checks should include parasite screening to better protect both cats and communities.
A new layer for conservation planning
The findings do not suggest that parasites are the main cause of tiger decline, but they add a crucial layer to conservation efforts. Habitat loss and poaching remain the biggest threats, yet a sick tiger is less able to hunt, breed, or defend its territory. The study's authors call for routine health monitoring in tiger reserves, especially in the Sundarbans, where the dense, humid environment may help parasites thrive. They also note that domestic animals, such as cattle and dogs, can spread parasites to tigers, so managing village livestock near park borders could reduce infection rates.
