Bears with a fruity diet

Researchers tracked sloth bears in the dry forests of central India between November 2021 and July 2022, covering both winter and summer seasons. They collected bear scat and analyzed what the animals had eaten. The results showed that fruit made up a significant part of their diet, especially during the dry months when other food is scarce. Seeds from several tree species passed through the bears intact, meaning the animals were not just eating, they were transporting viable seeds to new spots.

A forest shaped by dung

Why does this matter locally? In these dry forests, natural regeneration can be slow, and many tree species rely on animals to move their seeds. Sloth bears roam over large areas, so they can deposit seeds far from the parent tree. The study suggests that bears help maintain plant diversity and forest structure, acting like gardeners with paws. For villagers and forest managers, this means protecting sloth bears is not just about saving a charismatic species, it is about keeping the whole ecosystem working.

The research team surveyed the area during two seasons to understand seasonal shifts in bear feeding habits. They found that the bears' fruit intake varied, but the role as seed movers remained consistent. The seeds that came out in scat showed good germination potential, which strengthens the case that sloth bears are a key part of the forest's life cycle.

This discovery shifts the image of sloth bears from insect specialists to important ecological players. In a country where dry forests face pressure from development and climate change, recognizing every creature's role helps guide conservation. The study does not claim bears are the only dispersers, but it makes clear they are a vital one. For now, the humble sloth bear has earned a new title: forest shaper.
