The discovery, published in Science Advances by researchers from the American Museum of Natural History and Dartmouth, offers the clearest glimpse yet into the moment life on Earth became large, complex, and unmistakably animal.

A rare window into the first animals

The fossils belong to the Ediacaran biota, a group of mostly soft-bodied organisms that lived on ancient seafloors more than 500 million years ago. They came in strange forms: flat discs, leafy shapes, and ribbed ovals. Some species have been linked to modern animal groups like mollusks, comb jellies, and cnidarians, the group that includes jellyfish and corals. Others resemble nothing alive today.

What makes this site exceptional is its richness. Ediacaran fossils have been found on every continent except Antarctica, but sites with more than ten species are extremely rare. Soft bodies rarely fossilized, so only unusual environmental conditions could preserve them. This new site in Canada offers exactly that, giving scientists a rare, detailed view of a period that lasted roughly 40 million years.

A White Sea community found in North America

Researchers divide Ediacaran organisms into three major assemblages based on their place in the geologic record: the Avalon (575-559 million years ago), the White Sea (559-550 million years ago), and the Nama (550-538 million years ago). Before this discovery, White Sea fossils had been documented in Europe, Asia, and Australia, but never in North America. The Canadian specimens, dated to about 567 million years old, belong to this White Sea assemblage, making them the first of their kind found on the continent.

The age of the fossils suggests that animal movement and sexual reproduction began 5 to 10 million years earlier than previous evidence indicated. Lead author Scott Evans, assistant curator of invertebrate paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History, noted that for 3 billion years, life on Earth was dominated by microbes. Then, suddenly, these strange marine animals appeared, big enough to see and capable of behaviors we would find familiar today.

The site also hints that complex animal life may have first flourished in the deep ocean, a shift from the shallow-water environments where many Ediacaran fossils are typically found. For local people in the Northwest Territories, the discovery puts their region at the center of one of paleontology's biggest questions: how and when did animal life begin? The fossils rewrite the timeline of early evolution, showing that the dawn of animal life was earlier, and more complex, than scientists once thought.
