The research, conducted in the United States, analyzed decades of health data from more than 260,000 flight crew members across multiple countries. It found that those who spent the most time in the air had significantly higher rates of cancer mortality, particularly from breast cancer in women and melanoma in men.

What the data shows about long-haul careers

The study compared flight crews to the general population and found a clear pattern: the more years spent flying, the greater the cancer death risk. Crew members who worked for 15 years or more had nearly double the risk of dying from breast cancer compared to the general public. Melanoma deaths were also elevated, especially among male crew members who logged extensive flight hours.

Cosmic radiation is the culprit. At high altitudes, the Earth's atmosphere offers less protection from galactic cosmic rays, which can penetrate aircraft cabins. Over a career, that exposure adds up, and the study's authors say it may explain the elevated cancer rates.

Why this hits close to home for aviation workers

The findings have stirred concern among flight crews, who often spend decades crisscrossing time zones at 30,000 feet. For many, the job is a lifestyle, not just a paycheck. The study's authors note that flight crews are exposed to radiation levels that are several times higher than what nuclear power plant workers typically receive, yet they are not classified as radiation workers under most regulations.

That regulatory gap means flight crews may not receive the same health monitoring or protective measures as other radiation-exposed professionals. The study's authors argue that airlines and regulators should consider updating safety standards to reflect the new evidence.

A call for better protection and awareness

The study does not prove that cosmic radiation alone causes these cancers, but it adds to a growing body of evidence that flight crews face unique occupational health risks. The authors suggest that airlines could reduce exposure by adjusting flight routes, especially on polar routes where radiation levels are higher, and by ensuring crews are aware of their cumulative exposure.
