A new study has found that children exposed to PFAS chemicals early in life are more likely to develop gut inflammation. The so called forever chemicals, which linger in the environment and human body for years, appear to disrupt the digestive system even at low levels. Researchers in the United States tracked hundreds of children from birth to early adolescence to reach this conclusion.

What the study found in children’s guts

The research, led by scientists at the University of Southern California, analyzed blood samples from children taken at birth and again at age 12. They measured levels of seven different PFAS compounds. Children with higher PFAS concentrations in their blood showed significantly higher markers of intestinal inflammation. The link held even after adjusting for diet, income, and other environmental exposures. The inflammation markers included calprotectin, a protein released when the gut lining is irritated.

Why families and doctors are paying attention

Gut inflammation in childhood is not just a stomach ache. Chronic intestinal inflammation can lead to conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, which causes pain, poor nutrient absorption, and long term health problems. The study adds to a growing body of evidence that PFAS chemicals, used in nonstick pans, waterproof clothing, and food packaging, may harm developing bodies in ways not fully understood. Parents in communities with contaminated drinking water have become especially concerned. The study was published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
