Open grasslands and manicured parks offered only modest relief, while green walls, despite their popularity in modern architecture, delivered the least cooling of all.

The findings point to a simple principle: shade matters. Trees block sunlight before it hits the ground, and they release moisture through their leaves, creating a double cooling effect. Water bodies cool mainly through evaporation, but they do not block solar radiation. Grass absorbs less heat than pavement, but without shade, it still heats up considerably.

The study's authors walked through residential streets, parks, and woodland patches to collect temperature data during heat events. They found that neighborhoods with mature trees stayed noticeably cooler than those with open lawns or paved plazas.

Extreme heat can make daily life uncomfortable and even dangerous, especially for the elderly, young children, and people with health conditions. The study suggests that preserving existing woodlands and planting new trees in cities could be one of the most effective ways to adapt to a warming climate.

City officials in Guildford and elsewhere have been experimenting with green roofs, vertical gardens, and new parks. But the research indicates that these efforts, while useful, should not replace the protection offered by large, healthy trees. A single mature tree can cool an area as effectively as several air conditioners running for hours.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence that urban forests are not just aesthetic additions. They are critical infrastructure for keeping cities livable as global temperatures rise.
