The largest animals to walk the Earth, the megaherbivores of Africa, did not disappear because they were especially prone to dying out. A new study from Spanish research institutions shows that their decline over millions of years came from a different, more subtle cause: they simply stopped producing new species.
A Diversity Crisis, Not an Extinction Crisis
Researchers from the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC), the National Research Center on Human Evolution (CENIEH), and the University of Alcalá analyzed the fossil record of African megaherbivores, animals weighing over a tonne, like elephants and hippopotamuses. They found that the loss of diversity in this group was not driven by a higher extinction rate. Instead, the rate at which new species emerged, the speciation rate, was exceptionally low. This meant that even as some species died out naturally, few or no new ones arose to take their place, leading to a long-term decline in their numbers and variety.
The study, published in Nature Communications, challenges a long-held assumption that large animals are simply more vulnerable to extinction. The researchers looked at the entire history of these creatures and found that their evolutionary tree had fewer branches than expected. The problem was not that the branches were breaking off faster, but that new branches were rarely sprouting.
