The oldest known footprints of a prehistoric human cousin called Paranthropus boisei were discovered in Kenya, and they show that this species walked just like we do. Even more surprising, the same patch of ancient mud also holds footprints of our direct ancestor, Homo erectus. The two species lived on the same landscape at the same time.

A muddy lakeshore preserved a prehistoric encounter

The footprints were found at a site called Koobi Fora on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya. Researchers from the United States, Kenya, and Britain uncovered the tracks in 2021 and 2022. The prints were pressed into wet sediment about 1.5 million years ago and then quickly buried, which kept them intact. Scientists identified 12 footprints from Paranthropus boisei and three from Homo erectus. The prints show that both species walked upright with a heel to toe stride, a fully human way of moving.

Why locals and scientists took notice

For decades, researchers have found bones and teeth of Paranthropus boisei and Homo erectus in the same rock layers around Lake Turkana. But bones cannot prove that two species lived side by side at the exact same moment. Footprints are different. They are a snapshot of a single day. The new tracks are the first direct evidence that these two hominins shared the same habitat and possibly the same resources. Local communities in the Turkana region have long known the area holds ancient secrets. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important places on Earth for studying human evolution.

What the footprints reveal about our ancient cousins

Paranthropus boisei had a small brain and large flat teeth built for chewing tough plants. Homo erectus had a larger brain, made stone tools, and is considered a direct ancestor of modern humans. The footprints show that Paranthropus boisei had a foot structure very similar to modern humans, with a pronounced arch and a big toe aligned with the other toes. This means it walked efficiently on two legs, not like an ape. The Homo erectus footprints at the site are the oldest known prints of that species. Together, the tracks suggest that two very different human relatives lived in the same neighborhood without one wiping out the other for hundreds of thousands of years.

These footprints do not tell us whether the two species interacted or simply ignored each other. But they do confirm that for a long stretch of prehistory, our direct ancestors shared the planet with another upright walking cousin. The ground they walked on is now dry desert, but the prints they left behind have opened a rare window into a moment when two branches of the human family tree stood on the same shore.
