A volunteer in the United Kingdom has become the first person to receive a new experimental Ebola vaccine, marking a fresh step in the long fight against one of the world's deadliest viruses. The trial, run by the University of Oxford, aims to test a jab designed to protect against multiple strains of Ebola, including the Zaire species responsible for major outbreaks in Africa.
A needle in the arm, a global hope
The first dose was administered at the Oxford Vaccine Group in early April 2025. The volunteer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is part of a Phase 1 study that will eventually enroll up to 60 healthy adults. Researchers will monitor the participants for safety and immune response over the coming months. The vaccine uses a chimpanzee adenovirus vector, a technology similar to that used in some COVID-19 shots, to deliver Ebola genetic material into the body and trigger an immune response.
Why this trial matters beyond the lab
Ebola remains a persistent threat in parts of Africa, where sporadic outbreaks have killed thousands since the virus was first identified in 1976. The deadliest epidemic, from 2014 to 2016, swept through Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, claiming more than 11,000 lives. Existing vaccines, such as Ervebo, target only the Zaire strain. The new candidate, called ChAdOx1 biEBOV, aims to protect against both the Zaire and Sudan species, potentially simplifying outbreak response. Local communities in affected regions have long called for broader protection, as health workers often face logistical hurdles deploying multiple vaccines.
What happens next
The trial is expected to run for 12 months, with interim results anticipated later this year. If the jab proves safe and generates strong immunity, larger trials in Africa could follow. The University of Oxford is collaborating with the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. For now, the first volunteer's injection is a small but concrete step toward a tool that could one day help stop Ebola before it spirals into a crisis.
