The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a cosmic chest filled not with gold, but with dozens of newborn stars. This celestial treasure lies in the Carina Nebula, a star-forming region roughly 7,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Carina, and it is glowing from within thanks to the intense radiation of its stellar inhabitants.
A Chest Carved by Starlight and Winds
The feature, aptly named the Treasure Chest, is a cometary globule, an isolated cloud of gas and dust with a dense head and a sweeping tail. While such clouds often resemble comets, this one looks remarkably like a wooden chest with its lid wide open. The sculpting is the work of piercing starlight and billowing winds from nearby massive stars, which shape the dust clouds into intricate forms.
Inside the Chest: A Cluster of Young Stars
Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) revealed that the chest contains a compact cluster of about 70 stars, the most massive of which is a rare O-type star roughly 19 times the mass of the Sun. The cluster is likely around 1.3 million years old, though earlier estimates suggested it could be as young as 100,000 years. Because of its youth, the cluster remains deeply embedded in dusty clouds, with many stars surrounded by circumstellar discs. Over time, the brilliant starlight will dissipate the surrounding gas and reveal the entire cluster.
The Carina Nebula, spanning about 260 light-years, is the nearest high-mass star-forming region where astronomers can study the full range of star formation. It houses some of the most massive stars in our galaxy, including Eta Carinae, a star system located just 39 light-years from the Treasure Chest. Eta Carinae contains a star 100 times as massive as the Sun and about 5 million times as luminous. Nearby, the star cluster Trumpler 16 adds to the intense radiation with several extremely hot massive stars.
Astronomers used Webb as part of observing programme #5408 to study how young stars in the Carina Nebula collect gas from their surroundings and expel it through outflows. This research helps explain how stars shape their neighbourhoods, offering a valuable opportunity to understand the earliest stages of stellar evolution. The Treasure Chest, with its open lid and glowing interior, is a striking reminder that the universe’s most precious jewels are often the stars themselves.
