The newly designated species, Manis aurita, was previously lumped together with Chinese pangolins, but genetic analysis now shows it is a separate lineage. This discovery gives conservationists a new tool to trace illegally traded pangolin scales back to specific species and regions, potentially strengthening efforts to combat poaching.

A Museum Specimen Rewrites the Family Tree

Researchers from the Field Museum and Nepal Engineering College at Pokhara University spent over five years investigating pangolin evolution. Their work combined DNA evidence with physical traits to untangle how many pangolin species exist and how they are related. The key came from a museum specimen collected nearly two centuries ago, whose DNA helped confirm that Himalayan pangolins represent a unique evolutionary branch.

The classification had already shifted in 2025, when another team split what were once called Chinese pangolins into two species. One lives mainly in China, while the other, named Manis indoburmanica, inhabits the Himalayan foothills across Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Myanmar. But scientific naming follows a priority rule: the earliest valid name takes precedence. Feijó and his colleagues, already deep in their own decade-long study, realized the older specimen's name, Manis aurita, had priority.

Why Local Communities and Conservationists Care

Pangolins are medium-sized mammals found only in Africa and Asia, with long tails, curved claws, and overlapping scales that make them look almost prehistoric. Those scales are also their curse. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world, heavily targeted by poachers, leaving many species at serious risk of extinction. In Nepal and northern India, local communities have long known these animals existed, but without a confirmed species identity, conservation planning was difficult.

The new findings, published in Communications Biology, clarify where different pangolin species live and how to tell them apart. That information can help authorities identify where illegally traded pangolins are being hunted. As researcher Narayan Koju noted, the confirmation provides a strong scientific basis for conservation planning and wildlife forensics, protecting one of the world's most trafficked mammals from extinction.

A Clearer Path to Protection

The study highlights the importance of museum collections and international collaboration. A specimen preserved for nearly two centuries turned out to hold the key to a modern conservation puzzle. By confirming Manis aurita as a valid species, researchers have given conservationists a precise target for protection efforts. The work also demonstrates that long-term research can yield unexpected results, even from animals that were thought to be well understood. With this new knowledge, efforts to stop poaching and safeguard pangolin populations can be more focused and effective.
