A fossilized jawbone found in the Egyptian desert is forcing scientists to rethink where the ancestors of humans and all living apes first appeared. The bone belongs to a previously unknown species of ape that lived 17 to 18 million years ago, and it is the first confirmed ape fossil ever found in North Africa from that time period. Its features place it closer to modern apes than any known East African species of the same age, pointing to Egypt and the wider Middle East as a possible evolutionary crossroads for the lineage that led to gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans.
A 17-Million-Year-Old Jaw That Changes the Map
An international team of researchers from Mansoura University in Egypt and the University of Southern California published their findings in the journal Science. The fossil, named Masripithecus moghraensis, was recovered from the Wadi Moghra fossil site in northern Egypt during fieldwork in 2023 and 2024. The name combines Masr, the Arabic word for Egypt, with the Greek word for ape. The species name refers to the fossil-rich area where the remains were found. Only part of the lower jaw survived, but it contains a combination of traits not seen in any other ape from the same period. The jaw is unusually sturdy, with large canine and premolar teeth and molars that have rounded, heavily textured chewing surfaces.
Why North Africa Was Overlooked for So Long
Before this discovery, Early Miocene fossil sites in North Africa had produced remains of monkeys but no confirmed apes. That gap led many scientists to believe that early apes were mostly confined to areas farther south in Africa. Younger ape fossils have been found across Africa, Asia, and Europe, but researchers have long debated where the ancestors of modern apes actually originated. Hesham Sallam, a paleontologist at Mansoura University and senior author of the study, said his team spent five years searching for this kind of fossil because the early ape family tree clearly had a missing piece, and North Africa held it. The new evidence suggests that gaps in the fossil record may have distorted the true history of crown Hominoidea, the group that includes all living apes and their last common ancestor.
A New Evolutionary Crossroads
Masripithecus shows that apes were already living in North Africa during the Early Miocene and that they differed substantially from ape species of a similar age found in East Africa. For local researchers and the broader scientific community, this fossil shifts the focus of early ape evolution away from East Africa and toward a region that had been largely ignored. The discovery does not settle the debate about human origins, but it adds a critical data point that challenges long-held assumptions. It also highlights how much of the fossil record remains undiscovered, and how a single jawbone can redraw the map of our own deep ancestry.
