Researchers at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, Norway, analyzed satellite data showing that Arctic sea ice reached its maximum winter extent in March 2026 at the lowest level ever measured. That maximum was 5% smaller than the previous record low, set just two years earlier. The winter decline was driven by unusually warm air and ocean temperatures across the Bering Sea, the Barents Sea, and the Kara Sea. In some areas, sea surface temperatures ran 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average.

For Indigenous communities in northern Norway, Canada, Greenland, and Alaska, the shrinking winter ice is not an abstract number. It affects travel routes, hunting seasons, and the stability of coastal land. Thinner ice makes it dangerous for fishers and reindeer herders who rely on frozen waterways for transport. Local leaders in Svalbard and along the Norwegian coast have reported that some traditional winter trails are no longer safe to cross. The loss of ice also accelerates coastal erosion, because open water allows bigger waves to hit shorelines that were once protected.

What the data shows about the bigger trend

The record winter decline ends a three-year period in which Arctic sea ice loss had appeared to slow down. Some scientists had speculated that natural climate variability might be temporarily offsetting the long-term warming trend. The new data suggests that pause is over. The winter of 2025-2026 saw the largest single-year drop in ice extent since monitoring began in 1979. The Norwegian Polar Institute noted that the ice that did form was thinner and younger than in past decades, making it more vulnerable to summer melt.

This winter’s record loss does not guarantee a record summer melt, but it leaves the Arctic with a thinner starting point heading into the sunlit months. The region has been warming nearly four times faster than the global average, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. The new measurements confirm that the long-term decline in sea ice continues, with no sign of reversal.
