That gap has surprised many space watchers, especially as China has pushed forward with ambitious lunar projects.

A lunar laser link with a slower pulse

The system is set to fly on the Chang'e-7 mission, scheduled for launch around 2026. It will use a laser terminal to send high-resolution images and video from the Moon's south pole region. The 1 Gbps downlink sounds fast for everyday use, but it falls short of the 622 Mbps NASA managed with its Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration in 2013. In fact, NASA's system was designed to test speeds up to 622 Mbps, and it achieved that rate from lunar orbit to Earth.

Why the speed gap matters for lunar science

For scientists, the difference is not just about bragging rights. Faster laser links mean more data can be sent back from the Moon, including detailed maps, mineral scans, and real-time video. China's Chang'e-7 will focus on searching for water ice in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole. That work relies on sending large amounts of data back to researchers on Earth. A slower link could limit how much of that data gets transmitted during the mission's operational window.

The mission is part of China's broader push to build a permanent research station at the Moon's south pole by the 2030s. Local engineers and space officials have framed the laser terminal as a stepping stone for future deep-space communication. But the comparison with NASA's earlier achievement highlights how quickly space technology can become a benchmark, even when it is more than a decade old.

The laser system on Chang'e-7 will still be a first for China, marking the country's initial attempt at laser communication between the Moon and Earth. It will complement the existing radio frequency systems, which are slower but more reliable. The mission is expected to launch on a Long March 5 rocket from Wenchang Space Launch Site.

For now, the 1 Gbps figure stands as a reminder that progress in space is rarely a straight line. Even as China prepares to land on the Moon's south pole, its communication hardware will trail a capability that NASA proved years earlier.
