Europe is going to the Moon with a rover of its own, and it will be looking for water. The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a deal with ispace-Europe to build MAGPIE, the first European lunar rover, which will land near the Moon's south pole in 2029.

A rover with a drill and a radar to find hidden ice

MAGPIE, short for Mission for Advanced Geophysics and Polar Ice Exploration, is designed to operate for about 10 Earth days. It will carry a drill, a volatile analyser, ground-penetrating radar and a neutron detector. These tools will help it measure water and other volatiles in the lunar soil and study the subsurface geology.

The rover's destination, the Moon's south pole, is considered a prime spot for future exploration because it may hold ice in permanently shadowed craters. Finding and understanding these resources is essential for planning long-term human missions.

A new way of doing space exploration

The signing ceremony took place yesterday evening at the Space for Inspiration event in Copenhagen, Denmark. ESA and ispace-Europe celebrated the start of the MAGPIE implementation. ispace-Europe will act as prime contractor, responsible for building, developing and flying the rover. The rover will ride to the Moon on ispace's Mission 4 lunar lander, as part of a collaboration between ESA and JAXA, Japan's space agency.

Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA's Director of Human and Robotic Exploration, said the Moon's south pole is a key destination and that prospecting for water and other volatiles will provide critical knowledge for sustainable exploration. He also noted that MAGPIE is ESA's first lunar small mission, following a faster and more cost-effective development model.

Julien-Alexandre Lamamy, CEO of ispace-Europe, said the mission combines commercial delivery with world-class science and will help build Europe's operational capability on the lunar surface.

Why this mission matters for future Moon plans

MAGPIE is part of ESA's Moon Explore initiative, which aims to develop key capabilities in a more agile way. By using smaller missions and commercial partners, ESA hopes to launch more frequently and accelerate innovation. The rover's findings could inform where and how future astronauts might extract water, oxygen or other resources.

The mission also strengthens international cooperation, with Europe and Japan working together on lunar exploration. ESA says more details about its small missions and other lunar efforts will be announced in October.

For now, MAGPIE represents a concrete step toward a European presence on the Moon, one that could reshape how space agencies approach exploration in the coming decades.
