A single volcano on Jupiter's moon Io is erupting with more power than every volcano on Earth put together. NASA's Juno spacecraft measured the heat coming from Loki Patera, a volcanic depression on Io, and found it releasing energy on a scale never before seen in our solar system.
A lava lake that keeps breaking its own records
Loki Patera is not a mountain. It is a massive depression filled with molten lava, a lake of fire roughly 125 miles across. Juno's Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper, or JIRAM, instrument took its temperature during a close flyby in December 2025. The data showed the surface of the lava lake glowing at temperatures above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat output from this single feature, NASA scientists said, exceeds the combined thermal emission of all known active volcanoes on Earth.
Why this moon is the most volcanic place we know
Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system. The moon is caught in a gravitational tug of war between Jupiter and two other large moons, Europa and Ganymede. That constant pulling stretches and squeezes Io, generating enormous internal heat. The result is hundreds of volcanoes that constantly reshape its surface. Loki Patera is the largest and most powerful of them. It has been active for decades, but Juno's recent pass gave scientists their clearest look yet at just how much energy it releases.
What the flyby revealed about the moon's hidden interior
The Juno spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016. It was originally designed to study the gas giant itself, but its mission was extended to include flybys of the planet's largest moons. During the December 2025 pass, Juno came within about 2,500 miles of Io's surface. That close approach let JIRAM map the temperature of Loki Patera in detail. Scientists saw that the lava lake's crust was constantly breaking and reforming, with fresh hot lava welling up through cracks. The data helps researchers understand what is happening deep inside Io, where the heat that drives these eruptions originates.
For people on Earth, the discovery is a reminder that our planet is not the most extreme place in the solar system. A single spot on a moon 390 million miles away is doing something no volcano here can match. Juno will continue to fly past Io, and each pass brings new data about a world that is literally on fire.
