The Sumatran orangutan population fell by nearly 20 percent between 2000 and 2015, even though the rate of forest loss on the Indonesian island slowed during that same period. That is the central finding of a large scale study published by researchers who spent years counting orangutan nests across Sumatra.
What drove the decline when forests were not disappearing as fast
Scientists surveyed more than 1,000 locations across the island to estimate orangutan numbers. They found that the total population of Sumatran orangutans dropped from roughly 14,000 to about 11,500 individuals over 15 years. The decline was not uniform. Some areas lost orangutans at much higher rates than others.
Hunting and killing emerged as a major hidden threat
The study points to direct killing by humans as a primary cause. Even in places where forests remained intact, orangutan numbers fell. Researchers concluded that hunting and conflict with people, not just habitat loss, are driving the species toward extinction. Local communities sometimes kill orangutans when the animals raid crops or are seen as pests.

For years, conservation programs focused heavily on stopping deforestation. This study suggests that protecting forests alone will not save orangutans. People in Sumatra care about these great apes, but the pressures from agriculture and human settlement continue to put them at risk.
