A soft patch stuck to the skin can push the brain into REM sleep faster and keep it there longer, no pills or scalpels required. In a 28-person trial, the device cut the average time to REM by 43 minutes and stretched the stage by about 16 minutes. The results, published in Nature Communications, come from researchers at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States.
A patch that listens and stimulates
The device, named NEUSLeeP, pairs gentle ultrasound pulses with electrodes that read brain waves in real time. That combination lets it nudge deep brain regions tied to sleep while also tracking how the brain responds. The researchers say it is the first time such a noninvasive approach has hit those specific areas during REM sleep.
Users in the study wore the patch at home, not in a lab. Both healthy sleepers and those with mild sleep troubles saw benefits. Participants called the patch comfortable, and the team reported only minimal side effects.
More than just better sleep
Among healthy volunteers, the stimulation also raised heart rate variability, a marker of how well the body handles stress. Brain scans showed changes in circuits linked to emotion. That hints the patch might do more than improve sleep, it could help with mood and resilience.
REM sleep is tied to emotional reset and stress adaptation, the researchers note. Disrupted REM has been linked to depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Current treatments like medication or therapy can have side effects or miss the root causes of poor REM sleep.
The team is planning larger trials to see if NEUSLeeP can help people with insomnia, depression, and PTSD. For now, the patch offers a new way to study and potentially treat sleep disorders from home, without invasive procedures.
