A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found that large parts of the Sacramento Valley underwent irreversible ground compaction during recent droughts, permanently destroying some of the region's underground water storage capacity.

The slow crush beneath the fields

The study focused on the aquifer systems under the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, where farmers grow water-intensive crops like rice, fruit trees and nut trees. During droughts, surface water runs short, so growers pump massive amounts of groundwater. Over time, that heavy extraction changed the aquifer systems. The researchers found that in the Sacramento Valley, the ground compacted so severely that it cannot bounce back. That means the pore spaces that once held water are gone for good.

Why local farmers and communities should care

The Central Valley produces a huge share of the nation's food. When drought hits, groundwater becomes the lifeline. But if the aquifer has permanently lost storage space, there is less water available to pump in future dry years. The study indicates that while some changes to the aquifer systems can be reversed, the compaction in the Sacramento Valley is not among them. For the people who live and farm there, this is not an abstract problem. It means that the same amount of pumping in the next drought will yield less water, or that deeper wells will be needed to reach what remains.

This finding comes from research that examined how the ground physically deformed under the stress of pumping. The compaction is a one-way process: once the clay layers collapse, they do not re-expand. The study does not estimate exactly how much storage was lost, but it identifies the Sacramento Valley as a region where the damage is permanent.

The significance of this study is straightforward. California's Central Valley will keep growing food for the country, but the groundwater bank account beneath the Sacramento Valley has been permanently reduced. Future droughts will test how far that account can stretch.
