Snails and mussels at the bottom of the sea

Researchers examined deep sea snails and mussels that live around hydrothermal vents, which are cracks in the ocean floor that release superheated water. These animals were sampled from two separate vent fields, one in the Indian Ocean and one in the Pacific Ocean. The study, published by an international team of scientists, looked at the digestive systems of these creatures and found microplastics in nearly all of them.

The snails and mussels were collected during deep sea expeditions. The team used remotely operated vehicles to reach depths of more than 2,000 meters. At those depths, sunlight never reaches, and the animals rely on chemicals from the vents for energy. Yet even in this dark, extreme environment, they are consuming plastic.

Why local communities should care

The findings are significant for people living near these oceans, especially in countries like India, which borders the Indian Ocean. The study shows that plastic waste dumped into the sea does not just float on the surface. It sinks, breaks down into tiny particles, and enters the food chain at the very bottom of the ocean. These snails and mussels are part of a larger ecosystem that includes fish and other marine life that people eat.

Local fishing communities and coastal residents depend on the ocean for food and income. If microplastics are present in deep sea creatures, they may also be present in commercially important fish species. The study did not examine health effects on humans, but it raises concerns about the extent of plastic contamination in the seafood supply.

The researchers noted that the microplastics found included common materials like polyethylene and polypropylene, which are used in packaging and fishing gear. The particles were small enough to pass through the animals' digestive systems, but their presence indicates that plastic pollution is pervasive even in the most remote parts of the planet.
