A dinosaur hide that feels like poultry

The collagen structure and fiber arrangement closely matched those of birds, not lizards or crocodiles. This makes sense to biologists. Birds are the closest living relatives of theropod dinosaurs like the T. rex.

The leather square is small, only a few centimeters across. It is not meant for commercial use. The goal was to test whether ancient DNA could be used to produce physical materials. The researchers extracted genetic sequences from a T. rex fossil and inserted them into cells that produce collagen. Those cells were grown in a lab and the collagen was harvested and processed into leather.

Freiburg is a university city with a strong tradition in environmental research and bioengineering. Local residents have followed the story with a mix of fascination and unease. Some see it as a breakthrough in sustainable materials. Others question whether resurrecting even a tiny piece of a dinosaur is ethical.
