The European Space Agency's Plato spacecraft has just passed its final major test before launch, and it did so inside a room lined with blue foam spikes that look like something from a science fiction set. The test proved that the planet hunting probe's electronics can work together in space without interfering with each other.

Inside the Maxwell Chamber

The test took place at ESA's ESTEC facility in the Netherlands, inside a chamber called Maxwell. The room is a giant Faraday cage with conducting metal walls, floor, and ceiling that block all outside signals. Its 9 meter high interior is covered floor to ceiling with foam spikes that absorb electrical signals and sound, mimicking the emptiness of space.

Engineers sealed the chamber closed and then remotely switched on Plato's electronic equipment. They ran a series of checks to make sure the spacecraft's complex instruments and modules did not create unwanted crosstalk or interfere with communication systems.

Why Space Electronics Need Special Testing

In the extreme vacuum of space, a spacecraft's electronics can behave differently than they do in a lab on Earth. Without proper testing, this can lead to unforeseen consequences that might damage equipment or compromise the mission's goals. The Maxwell tests verified that Plato's many electronic systems are electromagnetically compatible and can work together in space without interference.

The Road to Launch

With electromagnetic compatibility checked off, Plato has now cleared the last remaining major exam in the series required to graduate for launch. The exams began in January with vibration and acoustic tests, followed by a month long stay inside the Large Space Simulator where the spacecraft proved it can withstand the harsh conditions of space.

Plato will lift off on an Ariane 6 rocket, with Arianespace planning the launch for March 2027. The spacecraft is designed to hunt for terrestrial planets around other stars, and its electronics are now confirmed ready for the journey.
