The catastrophic flash flood that struck northern Nepal on 26 August was so powerful that the glacier collapse that triggered it released energy equivalent to a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. The torrent of water, ice and debris raced nearly 100 km downstream, overwhelming towns, a border crossing, and vital infrastructure. Now, satellite imagery is giving emergency teams a clear view of the devastation, helping them reach areas that are otherwise impossible to access from the ground.

A wall of water and debris that swallowed valleys

The disaster began on the morning of Wednesday, 26 August 2026, when a rapid slope failure caused a glacier to collapse on Langtang Lirung in Langtang National Park, near the Nepal-China border. The impact of the collapsed glacier hitting the valley floor sent a surge of water, ice, and rubble down the Lende Kholā and Trishuli River valleys. The flood swept through towns popular with mountaineering tourists and pilgrims, and it overwhelmed the Gyirong Port border crossing. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands remain missing.

How satellites are helping responders on the ground

Rescue operations have been complicated by the region's naturally difficult mountainous terrain, cut-off areas, damaged infrastructure, and the ongoing risk of further flooding and landslides. Satellite imagery provides a rapid and comprehensive view of affected areas, which is vital for emergency response teams. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured images on 27 August, the day after the event, and on 12 August, before the flood. The natural-colour images clearly show a dramatic increase in river water. Additional images processed using shortwave-infrared channels, which can distinguish water and ice from clouds in this frequently cloud-covered region, were captured by the US Landsat-9 mission on 26 August, about two hours after the glacier collapsed, and by Sentinel-2 on 24 August for comparison.

The images reveal the scale of the inundation and devastation across the affected region. For local people, the flood has destroyed homes, livelihoods, and sacred sites, and the satellite data are helping coordinate the search-and-rescue efforts that continue amid the wreckage.
