A French astronaut is about to step into the void for the first time, and the world can watch it happen live. ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot will exit the International Space Station on Tuesday, 8 August, for a spacewalk that marks a personal milestone and a critical repair mission. A Six-Hour Repair Job in the Vacuum of Space
Adenot, alongside NASA astronaut Anil Menon, will leave the Quest airlock at approximately 12:35 GMT. Their task: replace a Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT), a vital piece of equipment that enables high-speed communication between mission control in Houston and the orbital outpost. The spacewalk is expected to last about six and a half hours, making it the 97th US spacewalk in history.
Training Underwater and Suiting Up in Orbit
Adenot's preparation has been intense. She has logged more than 150 hours of underwater training at ESA's European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, and at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, United States. In the weeks leading up to the spacewalk, she worked on preparing spacesuits and tools and reviewing procedures. On the day, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway will help Adenot and Menon into their suits. Menon, as EV1, will wear red stripes; Adenot, as EV2, will have none. From inside the Station, Meir and Hathaway will operate the Canadarm2 robotic arm to assist the spacewalkers.
