A satellite that can spot lightning from 36,000 kilometers above Earth is about to ride a European rocket into orbit, completing the first full family of next-generation weather watchers. The Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite, known as MTG-I2, is scheduled for liftoff on Thursday, 27 August, from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. This marks the ninth flight of the Ariane 6 rocket and its first mission to a geostationary transfer orbit, the farthest destination it has attempted so far.

A New Eye on Storms and Lightning

MTG-I2 is the third satellite in the Meteosat Third Generation constellation, and its arrival will complete the initial fleet of these advanced weather observatories. Together, these satellites are built to deliver images for weather forecasting over Europe and northern Africa with unprecedented detail. The mission introduces new data products and capabilities for European weather services, with a special focus on nowcasting, which means issuing very short-term warnings for severe weather events.

The satellite carries two key instruments. The Lightning Imager continuously monitors for lightning, a completely new capability for European meteorological satellites. The Flexible Combined Imager, meanwhile, tracks fast-evolving weather systems and can scan the entire visible disk of Earth in just 10 minutes. For a closer look, it can zoom in on Europe and North Africa every 2.5 minutes, giving forecasters the rapid updates needed to issue timely warnings.

Launch Details and What Happens Next

The launch window opens at 22:10 CEST, which is 17:10 local time in French Guiana, and lasts for two and a half hours. Live coverage on ESA WebTV and YouTube begins at 21:42 CEST. The Ariane 6 rocket will use two P120C solid-propellant boosters to send MTG-I2 into orbit. About 36 minutes after liftoff, the satellite is expected to separate from the rocket's upper stage, and ground controllers will acquire its signal.

Arianespace is the launch service provider for this flight, designated VA270. ESA manages the Ariane 6 development programme, which is designed to secure autonomous access to space for European citizens. For local people in French Guiana, the launch is a familiar sight, as the spaceport has been a hub for European space activity for decades. For meteorologists across Europe, the successful deployment of MTG-I2 means a more complete network of eyes in the sky, ready to track the next big storm before it forms.

This launch does more than add another satellite to orbit. It closes a chapter in the build-out of a system that will shape how Europe watches its weather for years to come. The data from MTG-I2 and its siblings will feed into daily forecasts and severe weather alerts, helping communities prepare for what the sky brings.
